Lolita Blog Carnival: DIY Gift Ideas for the Holiday!

Hello, lovely readers! I am sorry for my absence! I have recently started a new job, and it has been keeping me very, very busy so I have not had much time in the way of crafting/designing/blogging.

I didn't want to leave you hanging two weeks in a row though---how rude of me!

(Or has it been three weeks...oh my.)

This week's article prompt was do it yourself gifts, which was just in time for the Christmas season! Which I thought was lovely, since I keep a little folder on my computer for things/tutorials I want to make or try out!

    1. Lana, I KNOW right!!! :D If you try out that cup tutorial (or any of the others) let me know, I've always wanted to but I'm not sure I could make anything as beautiful and intricate to illustrate. I'd love to see what you make!

  3. You are a treasure, dear girl!XD I will definitely try the silhouette out, it is such a cute idea!<3 My sister is going to love it.

As for the cookie tutorial, that truly makes my hands itch to get to work - though my attempts with polymer clay have been so far disastrous. May I ask, Anni, is it normal for polymer clay which has been baked to bend? I was trying to make a dollhouse shelf from it, but it keeps bending and cannot carry a thing.

By the way - the promised saree tutorial is in the works, I hope you will like it:-) Sorry it took me so long, I've been rather badly ill.

  4. Rosa, I am sooooo looking forward to seeing what you come with for your Christmas presents! <3 (That sari too! <3 Yay!) Oh no, I am so sorry to hear that you have been ill. :((( I hope you will get better and recover very quickly!!

Hmmm, that sounds very strange! No once you've baked your clay it should be very stiff and not bendable at all. What brand are you using may I ask? If it's cooked at the right temperature setting in your oven, and for the right time you should be a-okay to go. Let me know, I'll try to help! xoxo

    1. Hi Anni, thank you very much for both your lovely comment and this sweet reply<3 May I compliment your sewing skills? I went through your etsy and were I not so broke, I'd have loved to buy the rose and the bunny skirts. They look very professional - may I ask where did you learn to sew so well?

As for the polymer clay, it is Fimo and the instructions enclosed said to bake it on 110 °C for 30 minutes, which I have in both my attempts done - and yet it bends and even suddenly breaks. Is it a bad quality clay or am I doing something wrong, what do you think?

    2. My darling Rosa, this is very very strange sounding to me! D: Fimo is supposed to be a good quality clay, much better than Sculpey brand. It sounds like you're doing everything correctly, and I just looked up a few websites to see. I snagged this bit from a site about baking it, see if it helps?

      "BAKING

Fimo Polymer clay and Sculpey Polymer clay should be baked in the oven on a baking sheet covered with foil or baking parchment for about 20 minutes to 1 hour at 130º C / 275º F. The clay will not harden until completely cool. Clay that has not been baked long enough will be fragile and break easily. Items can be re-baked several times without harm. Beware of overheating the clay by letting the oven temperature go too high as it gives off toxic fumes when burnt. If you have problems with baking, your oven thermostat may not be accurate so check with a separate oven thermometer - some ovens can over- or under-heat considerably. Try baking a test sheet: a thin, baked sheet of any of the strong clays like Premo or Super Sculpey. It should bend into a U-bend without snapping after baking. Sculpey III modelling clay remains fragile. "

^-^ Thank you very much for the compliment! <3 (That bunny skirt is one of my faves too!) I have been sewing since I was very little---even with scraps and a hand needle from my mum, then my grandmother and mum taught me how to use a sewing machine and quilt, and I picked up clothing later on my own in high school. I have also got my degree in fashion design and graduated this last May. :3
